Having the craic

A Happy Friday to you all my dear blogger friends. I am majorly excited today as you can prolly tell.

My friend Elaine is coming to visit us this weekend. We will pick her up from the airport tonight. I am really excited. She is a lovely person and even though we go long periods without talking to each other we seem to pick up where we left off with ease. Elaine’s an even bigger chatterbox than me and I can already see my husband’s desperate plea for silence. However this is not going to happen. At least not until Sunday night. Elaine enjoys good craic and so do I and we will use the short weekend to catch up over one or more bottles of wine. She is one of my favorite Irish friends and she is definitely not a party pooper. I love hanging out with her. There’s never a dull moment.

The weather is godawful and she really didn’t pick the best time to see Bavaria in all its glory. The snow has almost melted away, it is foggy, damp and cold. Okay maybe she will feel right at home seeing as she’s calling Ireland her home. We haven’t made any plans yet as to what we’re going to do but I am sure I will take her into town so she gets to see Munich while she is here. Now if you all keep your fingers crossed and hope and pray with me collectively that the sun will come out, I will be forever grateful.

I hope to post some pictures of whatever it is that we're going to be doing.

Anyway I totally digressed and forgot what I wanted to say. Do any of you get into some sort of cleaning frenzy before guests arrive? I always get stressed out. Working full time and all hobbies aside we only clean once a week. Mostly on Saturdays. Meaning that this was almost a week ago. So right after work and before heading to the airport I have an hour and a half to clean six rooms and two cat litterboxes...Thankfully the hubby will help out as he usually does. Gosh I love him even more for it.

How do you do it? Is it just me that get's totally freaked by cleaning? I swear it stresses me to the point where I want to just throw down my mop and bucket and run like Forrest Gump. Enough whining already. I will survive as I have every other time we had visitors. I just want it to be clean because I can't stand being in somebody's house and step on crumbs or touch something that is sticky or be in a dirty bathroom. That freaks me out. I wish I had a more relaxed approach towards it so I would not stress as much. Seriously how do you do it and do you have any tips?

It's always great to see old friends. It brings back so many good memories, and sometimes memories are what we need to create new ones.

I pity your husband, but I'm sure you'll reward him later for his good deeds ;)

I have maids come. My house is large and hard to clean and it is impossible to do it myself and my hubby is like, uh, NO help... so yeah. We hire out.

Have a great time with your friend!!

Sounds like fun!!

I used to go into a cleaning frenzy when I knew guests were imminent...but that was when I never could get a grip on the housework, in general.

Then my house burned down.

Nowadays, with much less "stuff" to contend with, I don't have to go into a cleaning frenzy for much of anything. Hell of a way to "declutter", but very effective!

Gosh, it's time like friends visiting I wish I was loaded and had a maid!

I suddenly go into a crazed, salivating state for several days before intended friend/family member arrives, even to the point of dusting/hiding things no one will ever even notice. Like the dog food bag. And the inside of my laundry cupboards.

...and five seconds later, the dogs run through, and it's all wrecked and I can fully concentrate on the fun of having people over :)

You've gotta remember - you're friends are there to visit you, not focus on your dusty window sills.

I always put it off until the last minute and then run around like mad. Then, at some point I say, "enough" and remember that they're coming to visit, not rate my housekeeping (like Katie said, above)... hope you had a great time!

I hope you had a good visit with your friend!

As for cleaning, I read (or heard on Oprah) to clean the room you hate to do first, for me that is the bathroom. I Hate to clean it but I know a clean bathroom is a must so I feel like I am ALWAYS cleaning it. Then I work my way out from the bedroom to the living room, kitchen, stairs and out the door with all the garbage. It takes me about 4-5 hours to clean my apartment unless I do one room a night dutring the week, 2 hours a night tops b/c I stop tp watch tv and lean in commercials!

I am a total nut when I hear people are coming and make myself insane trying to clean every tile, the grout in the bathroom that hasn't been white since 1980 and create that perfect Martha Stewart feel in my place...then no one really notices or cares. LOL
