Wacky Warning Labels or Can One Really Be This Stupid?

Did you know there was a contest for wacky warning labels? The contest is now in it's 11th year and is conducted by Michigan Lawsuit Abuse Watch, M-LAW. If you want to go "duh" and "no shit Sherlock" or "mmmkay Captain Obvious" or you simply need a good laugh then go and check out their website.

Personally I can't believe companies have to label their products because they are afraid of being sued by some idiot who is too stupid to know that you don't drink hot coffee from a papercup while driving. Or by some eejit that is too stupid to take his/her kids out of a stroller before folding it.
Avoid Death! Really? You think?

The best story I have come across to date and which my husband tells with great pleasure is that of a Mom that sued a supermarket because she stumbled over a child that was playing in the aisles. As a result of her fall she broke her foot. The Mom was awarded damages and as if that wasn't bad enough, it turned out it was her own child that she stumbled over!
Now I don't know about you but I want to slap the Mom for even sueing the supermarket in the first place. And then I want to slap her again for being stupid before I want to slap the judge and jury for actually awarding her money for her own stupidity and her obvious inability to raise a child that does not lay around in supermarket aisles.

Breath in, breath out, breath in, breath out. AAARGH...just writing about it sends me into fits of anger. But back to the topic. You can find photos of this (and previous) years winning warning labels here

Is it just me that gets so upset over these things or are you bothered by this as well? And why do the courts even award stupidity? For years I have been ranting about this subject and one of my favorite websites is Stella Awards.

The award got its name from Stella Liebeck who sued McDonalds after she spilled a cup of McDonald's coffee onto her lap, burning herself. A jury awarded her $2.9 million in damages. This website gives an award to the most outrageous, greedy and frivolous lawsuits...

My favorite warning is actually from a drug that helps with RLS (Restless Leg Syndrome). I actually read the warning in a magazine and also heard it on the TV commercial. The side affects of the drug is your typical side affects such as may causing bloating, dizziness, tiredness, etc.

But then, there's another warning, apparently this drug "may cause excessive gambling". I just get a kick out of that knowing that a drug to help with RLS causes a person excessive gambling.

At least in America the most common excuse for silly jury awards is that smart people can get out of jury duty leaving only the last competent to mete out justice.

I never skip jury duty. It's called duty for a reason. Besides, if I ever get to sit on an OJ or Michael Jackson jury I can write books and get rich!
