Have I ever mentioned that I am an only child? Well I was up until two and a half years ago when I met the man that is now my lovely husband. We got married pretty much one year after getting together and with it I got a brother-in-law and two sisters-in-law.
That was more than I bargained for and I am really happy to count them as immediate family now. But then something even better happened. I adopted a brother. One day one of my husbands old colleague buddies came to visit and it was "family at the first sight". He was like the brother I always wanted. Whenever I met someone from my husbands extended circle of friends I was very careful, shy even, holding back in getting to know them (that is a general issue).
Oddly nothing like that ever happened with him. He came, we got on well and when he's around it feels like he is family. Maybe-only maybe I am a bit biased. After all Sergej gave me Lilly. Any person that will give me a cat and says I can keep it gets to be in my 'good book'. But I would have liked Sergej even if he hadn't given me a cat. Whenever he comes to visit we have a shitload of fun and everyone is really relaxed. He also sends me awesome spanish ham and care packages. Where else do you get a Nintendo gameboy original from the late 80's or early 90's that I have been looking for for a long time. So what if he already has a real sister? I am happy to have a brother and he's coming to visit.
Last year I happened to also get a sister. A twin sister no less. It is like we were separated at birth. She writes what I am thinking and vice versa. That is why I call her my 'evil' twin though she is not evil at all. I am talking about Melisa who I must admit is totally awesome.
So in the end all these years of begging my parents for a brother or a sister were a waste of time because later in life I got to chose some really cool people to be some kind of substitute siblings :).

That's so great! oohh i can't wait to meet new friends that I can call brother and sister too!
See now, there is hope for Hope yet! Sometimes the best family we have is the one we can pick!
Does that work as far as substituting current siblings with new chosen siblings? Like an even exchange with their current family would be nice. Here dear friend, you can have my sister and I'll take yours. No give-backs!!
Awww, you're so sweet! You're not evil either!
I'll be back tomorrow (er, later) to probably make more of a comment...just got home from George and I'm exhausted. :)
Only child power!
You are blessed. Like it or not, most of us are stuck with our families; you got to choose yours.
Heh, yeah, I LOVE my in laws better than my own family. When the ex and I were dividing things up I told her I get to keep her family. She laughed but I was serious.
She was REALLY pissed when her family said they'd rather have me too. LOL!
I love this post! It really speaks to the fact that sometimes God brings people into our lives to fill voids that we've had, and it works out amazingly. :) Yay for your "brother" and "sister".
